Why is influencing the quantity and quality of who is born such a taboo subject, when it’s the prime mover.

PortWine asked:

……for improvement of almost all other areas? Let me go to an extremely politically incorrect place here with a question: In the west, aren’t children the biggest factor holding back black people and women? Hey, I’m not blaming kids, I was one myself. Since it’s not an agrarian society anymore, we have children for our own pleasure, and maybe hope that they choose a good nursing home for us if we can’t ourselves.
My real question is, why is there such resistence when anyone mentions the fact that influencing (note I didn’t use the word controlling) who is born is the prime mover for improvements in all other areas of society? Imagine if it wasn’t “cool” for too-young, alcoholic, stressed-out, or non self-sufficient people to have kids? You might be saying, it’s not “cool” now. But that’s not what they think; they think it’s either cool or at least just fine.
All I’m suggesting is that we make it less “cool” for less fit people to have children. No laws (China), no spifs (India), just a cultural understanding.

Fitness. 6 months enough time to revamp muscle tone?

November 11th, 2007
echo12283 asked:

I’m a 25 yr old woman, about 20 lbs heavier than I was at my super-skinny high school self, and looking to seriously tone-up within 6 months. I want to be TONED, not stick-thin. I realize everyone responds differently, but is this enough time to realistically make a marked improvement — provided I do at least 30 min decent cardio 3-4 times/week and challenging weight training on the other 3-4 days? Just for general info… I am 5′8″, NOT seriously overweight, and I don’t currently work out regularly, but I’m not freakishly out of shape – just a little flabbier than I’d like. ;) I have never been super athletic, therefore I’m feeling slightly lost because I’ve never actually achieved a lot of muscle definition before. Since this all takes time, I want to make sure the effort I put in is in the most effective direction possible and make sure this goal is realistic.

I’d be especially interested in hearing from people who have achieved similar goals or have tips for success. Thanks!

How to help a parent who doesn’t want or is afraid to raise her difficult child anymore?

November 9th, 2007
eyellnevrtell asked:

A parent with 4 children has one difficult 10 year old boy who is becoming increasingly difficult and out of control. She confided that she can’t control him and is afraid that as he gets older his behaviors will lead to serious trouble for him and her family. He doesn’t steal and other than physical fights has displayed major violence, but he often needs to be restrained from becoming violent and he is becoming more verbally violent. He is mean to other children verbally because he believes they are talking about him. For the most part, they aren’t. He has very low self-esteem.

Mom seems to be at her witts end. The child is medicated, and medications have be adjusted and readjusted time and again. He already receives therapy. He participates in extra curricular activities. He even is in the big brother program. I too am becoming out of ideas and clinging for that slightest bit of improvement for this child. Even though his mom never said anything about this to him, I know he is feeling that his mom wants to get rid of him by comments he makes. This can’t be helping, but I do understand his mom being at a loss of what to do and she needs to be there for her 3 other children. Does anyone have any suggestions of what options may be available for this family. His mom is a good mom. She is single and raising 4 children plus working two jobs. In my opinion she is handling that better than most, so her new feelings of wanting to get rid of her child tells me things are more serious than ever.

Oh, and what worries me the most is that her youngest boy who is 7 is beginning to act just like the 10 year old. This is not the 7 year olds natural behavior, you can tell he is learning this behavior from his brother.

Does the McCain Campaign Have a Reason to be Unusually Upbeat?

November 4th, 2007
asked:

An article on MSN report that the McCain campaign is unusually upbeat just days before the election. Do they really have a reason to be? With only five days until Election day, John McCain’s campaign aides seem to be in a happier mood than they have in quite some time. For the last few days, the campaign has been increasingly buoyed by what it says has been improvement in it’s internal polling of 14 battleground states. Even McCain himself is upbeat. ” He’s been happy for the last few days,” says one aide. ” That’s a change.” What to make of this? Because, still the landscape looks pretty bleak. A flood of public polls show that McCain is down in several important, traditional, Republican States. The News organizations and analysts that have reported and sifted the numbers guess that, at the moment, Obama would garner upward of 310 electoral votes by winning not only all the states that John Kerry won, but also Ohio, Virginia, and several other states that went for Bush in 2004. The article claims that the mindset of the McCain campaign on a continuum that sketches from deceit.( know they are losing, and play acting) to drudge like self delusion. ( clutching at any glimmer of hope)…..Does it seem that the McCain campaign is somewhere between self delusion, and truth?
